Key Feature 3
For the right design, identifying the right problem through research on the market and environmental impact is crucial.
Research
Identify the problem
1. Market Benchmark
2. Statistics
3. Microsoft & Sustainability
This opens an opportunity for Microsoft to expand into the market with a better product.
The educational computer market is dominated by Google’s Chrome OS with a 60% market share. The other 40% is shared between Microsoft and Apple, 22% and 18% respectively.
1. Market Benchmark
Map out the existing products in the market and identify the opportunity the market is missing.
Take apart the benchmark product and calculate its impact score by material.
Okala Impact Factors are a designer-friendly form of LCA developed with robust North American science.
2. Statistics
Chromebook's popularity exploded during the pandemic. With 4 years being the average lifespan of Chromebooks we are expecting a lot of e-waste to be created from it.
3. Microsoft & sustainability

Sustainability Leader
Project Natick is an experimental underwater data center by Microsoft.
By building a data center underwater, Microsoft is expecting to reduce costs and energy used for cooling the computers.
Surface devices are at the forefront of designing electronics with repairability in mind.
Surface devices implement features to help with repairability that no other big manufacturers offer.
Problem Statement
Define the problem
How can we redesign the future of educational computers that align with the interests of the users, a computer that can adapt to modern educational demands, and a computer that does not harm the environment and students' future?
The new design should lower the environmental impact of digital learning, provide a better learning experience through both hardware and software and always design for everyone.

Low Energy Displays
Modular design allows you to configure your Surface Book SE based on your needs.
Whether you want to write a document with an E-ink display and keyboard or want to make music with
MIDI Kit, it is up to you.
Surface Book SE is designed for everyone with different challenges. In addition to
Microsoft Adaptive Kit, Tactile dots, and Adaptive Port on the device help every user to use Surface Book SE with ease.
Surface Book SE has a display on both sides. Mini LED display as a main display and secondary E-ink display on the other side for optimal reading and other E-ink compatible applications.
Surface Book SE is designed with repair in mind. Modular design continues into the internals of the device allowing a larger number of user replaceable parts. Visit Miscrosoft.com/parts for a list of user replaceable parts and instruction videos.
